Description
"New Thing" is a term used to describe a subgenre of free jazz that emerged in the 1960s. The term was coined by jazz critic John Litweiler in his book "The Freedom Principle: Jazz After 1958." New Thing artists rejected traditional jazz forms and conventions and instead favored free improvisation and experimentation. They often incorporated elements of avant-garde music, such as dissonant harmonies, extended techniques, and unconventional instrumentation. Some of the most prominent New Thing artists include Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, and Cecil Taylor.
