Chopped and screwed is a remixing technique originating from Houston hip-hop that drastically slows down tracks while manipulating them through chopping, skipping, and record scratching to create a disorienting, syrupy sound. The style emerged in the 1990s as both a production method and cultural movement, evoking drowsy, psychedelic atmospheres often associated with Southern rap culture. Its hypnotic, pitch-shifted vocals and stuttering beats have influenced underground hip-hop and cloud rap scenes far beyond its Texas roots.
