Description
Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. It is characterized by a rhythm heavily based on reggae and often featuring an off-beat rhythm known as the "one drop", with a strong emphasis on the bass drum and snare drum. The genre also features distinctive toasting (a style of chanting or speaking over the music) and vocal harmonies. Dancehall lyrics often deal with social and political issues, as well as romance and sexuality. The genre has had a significant influence on hip hop and electronic dance music, and has spread to many other countries outside of Jamaica.
