Proto-punk is a genre of rock music that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It refers to the early work of bands that would later be associated with punk rock, but whose music was not yet fully developed or classified as punk at the time. Proto-punk bands often incorporated elements of garage rock, psychedelic rock, and hard rock into their sound, with a focus on rawness, energy, and rebellion. Some of the most notable proto-punk bands include The Stooges, MC5, and The Velvet Underground.
