Unblack metal, also known as Christian black metal, takes the aggressive sonic elements of black metal—tremolo picking, blast beats, and harsh vocals—while inverting its typically anti-Christian themes with Christian lyrics and spirituality. The genre emerged in the 1990s as a response to black metal's association with Satanism and church burnings, offering an alternative for musicians who appreciated the sound but not the ideology. Despite sharing the same musical intensity and darkness, unblack metal directs its themes toward spiritual warfare, faith, and religious devotion.
