Progressive metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that blends elements of progressive rock and metal. The genre is characterized by complex, intricate and technical song structures, unusual time signatures, longer song lengths, and virtuosic instrumental performances. Bands that are often associated with progressive metal include Dream Theater, Tool, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, and Meshuggah. The genre has also spawned numerous subgenres and fusion genres, including djent, a subgenre that emerged in the 2000s characterized by heavy use of palm-muted, distorted low-register guitar riffs and polyrhythms.
