Doom metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that is characterized by its slow tempos, heavy and thick sound, and bleak and pessimistic lyrics. The genre emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s and is influenced by blues rock, psychedelic rock, and heavy metal. It typically features downtuned guitars, distorted bass, and heavy use of drums, often with a slower tempo than other forms of metal. The lyrics often focus on themes of despair, death, and loss, and can be both introspective and outwardly critical of society.
